Frequently Asked Questions about Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. It has been practiced for more than 3,000 years to prevent and manage a variety of diseases and conditions.

What is acupuncture?

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on adjusting the flow of Qi, or energy, within the body. Illness and discomfort occurs when qi flow is blocked or insufficient. Acupuncture works by inserting fine needles at specific points on the body in order to readjust the flow of qi, which restores balance in the body.

Needles also stimulate the body to decrease inflammation, release natural painkillers like endorphins and promote the body’s natural ability to fight illness.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes—acupuncture is very safe when it is performed by a trained and licensed professional. The needles that professional acupuncturists use are sterile and disposable.

The needles are much thinner than typical injection needles, and most patients report either feeling only a small prick, or nothing at all. You may also feel a sense of warmth, tingling, or heaviness after the needles are inserted—in fact, many people find acupuncture very relaxing and often fall asleep during treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

How do I prepare for a treatment session?

Relax! Wear loose clothing that you find comfortable to lie down in. Try to avoid heavy perfumes or deodorants and be prepared to remove large accessories. One treatment session typically lasts 30-60 minutes.

After treatment, remember to drink water. Normal daily activities are fine to continue. Avoid aggressive exercise.
